Gašper Moderc is currently employed at Outfit7 in Ljubljana, where he works as a Game Developer, developing mobile applications — primarily games.
He is currently working on the game Mythic Legends.
His first professional experience was also at Outfit7, where he initially joined as a student. After completing his master’s degree, he became a full-time employee and continues to work there today.
At FAMNIT, he completed both his undergraduate and master’s studies in Computer Science.
How and why did you decide to study Computer Science at University of Primorska Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies?
For most of my life, I had very little contact with computer science. My first real exposure came only when I chose programming as an elective course during my Mathematics studies, which I attended for one year.
After just a few lectures, programming completely captivated me, and I decided to change my field of study to Computer Science.
Which knowledge and skills acquired during your studies are most useful in your current work?
What helps me the most is the broad knowledge I gained across many different areas of programming. For example: algorithms and data structures, databases, game development, and more.
However, the most valuable knowledge for my current position definitely came from independent assignments and projects that I was able to work on during my studies and specifically tailor toward the area that interested me most.
Which competencies currently seem to be the most sought after by employers in the field of computer science?
Based on my experience, practically all competencies in the field of computer science are highly sought after.
What would you recommend to Computer Science students at University of Primorska Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies on their path toward finding their first job?
I would recommend that students think carefully about which area of computer science interests them the most and deepen their knowledge in that field before they begin searching for a job — for example frontend development, backend development, IT, and similar areas.
Each position requires a broad range of specialized knowledge, and acquiring that knowledge takes a lot of learning and practice. If someone truly enjoys a particular field, it becomes much easier to specialize in it.
Since new technologies emerge every day, continuous self-education is necessary in every area of computer science.
What would you highlight as the biggest advantage of working at a company such as Outfit7?
The opportunity to develop video games is definitely the biggest advantage.
In addition, there is flexible working time, the possibility of remote work, and the opportunity to collaborate with experts from various European and other countries.
