Research

The faculty’s researchers are active within the UP FAMNIT Research Group. At the same time, the faculty maintains close cooperation in the field of research with the Andrej Marušič Institute of the University of Primorska (UP IAM), where the majority of UP FAMNIT’s higher education teachers and associates conduct their research. Some faculty members and researchers also carry out research within the Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Mechanics (IMFM).

Research cooperation with UP IAM is particularly well developed. The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in areas of mutual interest, based on which most study programmes as well as basic, applied, and other scientific research projects are implemented at UP IAM.

Researchers work in the fields of mathematics, computer science and informatics, natural sciences, and psychology. More information about the research areas is available here.

It is worth highlighting that the UP FAMNIT Research Group is one of the four leading research groups in the field of algebraic graph theory worldwide — the other three groups are based in China, Australia, and South Korea. Through this achievement, the faculty has placed the University of Primorska on the global map of established research institutions.

The faculty organizes and co-organizes conferences and other scientific meetings, while also encouraging the active participation of faculty members and associates at international scientific conferences and promoting international integration in general. Special emphasis is placed on research collaboration with foreign researchers, short-term visits by international scholars within the faculty’s educational and research processes, and visits of faculty staff to renowned foreign universities. Particular attention is devoted to young researchers and associates.

In cooperation with the Slovenian Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers (DMFA) and the Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Mechanics (IMFM), UP FAMNIT publishes the international mathematics journal Ars Mathematica Contemporanea. In 2011, the journal achieved an exceptional success by being included in the SCI index, and in 2012 it was ranked in the second quartile of SCI journals in the field of mathematics, representing an outstanding achievement even on a broader national scale.
